Rain Hailstorm Alert Warning:A fresh weather alert has been issued for several states in North India as the region may witness rainfall and possible hailstorms in the coming days. According to recent forecasts, a strong western disturbance is expected to become active around 16 February, which could significantly change weather conditions across both hilly and plain areas. This development is especially important for farmers, as many rabi crops are currently at a sensitive growth stage.
Western Disturbance Likely to Change Weather Pattern
Meteorologists indicate that a new and more powerful western disturbance will approach the Himalayan region from the night of 16 February. As it moves forward, a cyclonic circulation may develop over Rajasthan. This system is expected to draw moisture from the Arabian Sea, increasing cloud formation and rainfall activity across northwestern parts of the country.
Rainfall is likely in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, and several districts of Rajasthan on 17 and 18 February. As the system progresses, its impact may extend toward parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh by 18 and 19 February. Along with rainfall, gusty winds may also occur in some areas.
Risk of Hailstorm in Sensitive Areas
There is also a possibility of hailstorms during this period. Hail formation becomes more likely when strong thunderstorms develop under suitable temperature conditions in the upper atmosphere. If hail occurs, it could cause damage to standing crops, especially those close to harvesting. Farmers growing wheat, mustard, gram, and lentils should remain cautious, as these crops are currently in crucial stages such as grain filling and pod development.
Strong winds can cause crops to bend or fall, while excessive rainfall may lead to waterlogging in fields. Hail can directly damage grains and pods, reducing both quality and yield. Therefore, monitoring local weather updates is essential for minimizing potential losses.
Temperature Changes and Health Concerns
In recent days, temperatures in Delhi and nearby regions have remained above normal, with one of the warmest days of the season recorded earlier this month. However, light northwesterly winds may bring a slight drop in temperature. While severe cold is not expected to return, mornings and evenings may feel cooler. Sudden temperature changes during this transition period can also affect health, especially among children and the elderly.
Precautionary Measures for Farmers
Farmers are advised to ensure proper drainage systems in their fields to prevent water accumulation. If crops are ready for harvest, timely harvesting may help reduce risks. Checking crop insurance coverage and protecting stored produce are also practical steps. Keeping track of official weather advisories will help in making timely decisions.
