What is FASTag and How It Works

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system based on RFID technology. The tag is placed on a vehicle’s windscreen and is linked to a prepaid wallet or bank account. When a vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the toll amount is deducted automatically without stopping for cash payment. This system reduces waiting time, saves fuel, and lowers pollution caused by long queues at toll gates.

Simplified Activation Process in 2026

The 2026 update has made FASTag activation quicker and easier. Vehicle owners can now activate their tag through bank websites, mobile apps, authorized centers, and selected petrol pumps. The process requires completion of KYC using Aadhaar verification through OTP or biometric authentication. Once verification is complete, the tag can be activated instantly. Users can also link their FASTag account with UPI for easy recharge and automatic balance top-ups, ensuring smooth travel without payment failures.

Under the updated rules, all FASTag accounts must have accurate and updated KYC details. Tags issued before 2023 need re-verification to confirm vehicle and owner information. Inactive or incorrect FASTags may be blacklisted, and vehicles using them could face double toll charges. Commercial vehicles are required to maintain a minimum balance based on their travel pattern to avoid disruptions. Vehicle owners must also keep their registered mobile number and email updated to receive alerts and important notifications.
