For semi-urban branches, the minimum balance may be set at approximately ₹1,000, offering a balance between banking discipline and financial convenience. Urban and metro branch accounts will have higher minimum balance requirements, possibly up to ₹2,000, reflecting higher transaction volumes and the cost of living in larger cities. Customers in these areas need to monitor their accounts regularly to avoid penalties.

Penalty for Falling Below Minimum Balance

If an account falls below the prescribed minimum balance, PNB may charge a penalty. The fee varies depending on the type of account and the shortfall amount, typically ranging from ₹100 to ₹300, plus applicable GST. Even small shortfalls can attract penalties if they persist, so regular account monitoring is essential to prevent unnecessary deductions.

Special Accounts and Exemptions

Certain accounts, such as PM Jan Dhan accounts, typically have no minimum balance requirement, offering relief to financially weaker sections. Salary accounts usually do not require a minimum balance as long as salary deposits continue. Student and basic savings accounts may have minimal or no balance requirements, making banking accessible for young and new account holders.
